In the UK number plates for newly registered vehicles change on the 1st of March and 1st of September. From the 1st March 2022 new vehicles will have 22 in their number plate and from September 1st will have 72 in their number plates.
These new plates will incorporate the changes previously made in 2021.
The plates will be “BS AU 145e” standard plates, these plates are made from a tougher material which makes them more resistant to abrasion and other damage. Number plates can now only display solid black lettering, two-tone plates which were used to create 3D/4D effects have been banned. New plates must also include the supplier’s business name and postcode along with the name of the manufacturer and the new standard.
Number Plate Specification
Vehicles made after the 1st of January 1973 must have a white background on the front summer plate and the rear number plate must have a yellow background. There are strict rules regarding the specification of the letter and numbers on the registration plate.
These include:
- Characters must be 79mm tall
- Characters must be 50mm wide (except the number 1 or letter I)
- The thickness of the character stroke must be 14mm
- The spaces between characters must be 11mm
- The space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
- The margins at the top bottom and side must be 11mm
- The vertical space between the age identifier and the random numbers must be 19mm
- Since 2001 the font used in the number plate must be the Charles Wright font.
