do electric vehicles need an mot blog feature image

People new to electric or considering getting an EV may be wondering what the deal is with MOT tests; our guide explains all you need to know.

MOT tests are required on all cars once they turn three years old and electric vehicles are no exception.

What is an MOT?

‘MOT’ stands for Ministry of Transport. The MOT is an annual test that is required on all cars once they reach three years old which was introduced by the Department of Transport back in 1960. It is a way of testing a vehicles safety, exhaust emissions and roadworthiness in order to improve road user safety.

When do electric cars need an MOT?

The requirements for EV MOTs are the same as those for petrol and diesel cars. From the third anniversary of your vehicle’s first registration, it will need an MOT every year.

What is checked during an electric Vehicle (EV) MOT?

During the MOT test, the tester will check multiple aspects of your vehicle which are set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).  Testers will look at everything- does your vehicle have significant structural rust? Are your windscreen wipers in working order? Do all of your seatbelts work? Essentially an MOT is a 360-degree once over of all aspects of your vehicle.

The key area where MOT tests differ for electric vehicles compared to tests for petrol and diesel vehicles – is emissions.

Petrol and diesel vehicles have combustion engines, during MOT tests a probe is inserted into the exhaust to measure the level of pollutants emitted to check they are in line with the legal requirements. Electric cars do not directly produce emissions so this part of an MOT is not tested.
