2030 petrol and diesel ban blog feature image

What is the 2030 Petrol and Diesel ban?

From 2030 New cars and vans powered by only Petrol or Diesel will not be sold. Some New Hybrid vehicles will still be allowed to be sold until 2035.

Why is the ban coming into force?

The ban is part of the “green industrial revolution” to tackle climate change and to create jobs in industries such as nuclear.

Can I still drive a petrol or diesel car after the ban in 2030?

Yes! The ban is only on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. There are currently no plans to stop the use or sale of second-hand vehicles based on these criteria.

Electric vehicles are expensive, will anything be done to bring the prices down?

Whilst currently electric vehicles are significantly more expensive than petrol or diesel the difference is narrowing. Over the next 10 years as manufacturing of electric vehicles increases, this should improve.

The government currently offers a “low emissions vehicle” grant. With this grant, you can get a discount on the price of brand new low-emission vehicles through the grant the government gives to vehicle dealerships and manufacturers. You do not need to do anything if you want to buy one of these vehicles, the dealer will include the value of the grant in the vehicles price. The maximum grant available for cars is £3,000.

There is also currently a grant for a vehicle charger up to £350 (including VAT) off the cost of installing a charger at home through the electric vehicle home charge scheme.

Update

As of Tuesday 14th of June 2022, the grant was axed. Over the years the grant had reduced as the number of EVs sold increased. Find out more about the grant axe here > Plug-in grant axe
